Student leadership opportunities

At Triabunna District School, students have the opportunity to be involved with the Student Representative Council. At the beginning of the year, students from Year 3 to 12 select two class members to represent their class. The SRC members are students that also represent our school values of respect, growth, responsibility, courage and connection. The SRC act as a voice for students within our school community and work to raise awareness and funds about important issues in the wider community. The SRC helps students develop their communication, public speaking and teamworking skills. Our SRC also represents our school within the wider community by being involved in ANZAC Day events and visiting residents at the May Shaw Health Centre.

In 2025, Triabunna District School will be giving Year 9 and 10 students the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Students that choose to participate will undertake four core activities within the Award Framework and work towards individual goals. The Duke of Ed Framework is one of individual challenge. It presents young people with a program of voluntary activities that encourage personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility, and community service. Each person undertaking the Award Framework learns a skill, becomes more physically active, volunteers in their community, and undertakes a team adventure. The Award is offered in over 130 countries worldwide and is available at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, each progressively longer and more challenging.

Curriculum

All areas of the Australian Curriculum are valued and important. The use of its structure and assessment frameworks will include English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Technologies, and Pathways. In 2025 we are fullymoving to the new Australian Curriculum Version 9.0.

The Department for Education, Children and Young People continues to specify minimum requirements for curriculum provision to satisfy national educational agreements and state reporting commitments.

English, Mathematics, Science, History, Health & Wellbeing are mandated in all years of schooling.  A Pathways program incorporating Work Experience is embedded into the curriculum for Grade 9 and 10. Students are moderated and assessed against the current curriculum frameworks in their learning areas. We also assess against the Arts, Music and Technologies curriculum.

All curriculum areas emphasise the development of knowledge, skills and understanding; and the importance of inquiry, literacy, numeracy, thinking critically and digital technologies.

The curriculum provides a sound basis for students’ personal growth, further learning and work, and preparation for the opportunities and challenges of living in a complex world.

Primary Curriculum

The learning areas of the Primary curriculum are provided by both regular classroom teachers and specialist teachers from the Secondary section. Primary students participate in specialist Art, Health, ICT, Physical Education and Music lessons on a weekly timetable. Also, students participate in either Kitchen or Garden sessions on a fortnightly basis.

Secondary Curriculum

All secondary students have an allocation of ‘core’ subjects that include English, Maths, Science, History/HASS and Health and Physical Education. They are encouraged through all these lessons to become proficient users of digital technologies and to become inquiring, independent, and reflective thinkers.

In addition to their core subjects, secondary students will have the opportunity to select options that suit their own personal interests and talents. These vary from year to year depending on interest and the skill set of our teachers and have included subjects such as MDT, Art, Design and Digital Media, Music, Physical Education, Foods, Explore the Coast, Outdoor Education, Science Extended, Maths Extended, Athlete Development, Creative Writing and Drama.

Senior Secondary (Years 11 & 12)

Years 11 and 12 classes are currently held in our purpose-built learning space located at the north end of the school. Learners are advantaged by our smaller class sizes, individualised support, and strong relationships with families and the community.  In 2025 we are offering a range of TASC courses at Levels 1 & 2 in the learning areas of English, Careers, Art, Foods, Materials Technology and Road Safety.

Triabunna District School is a part of the teggana Collective, a group of schools working together to improve attendance, engagement, and academic outcomes for students in Years 11 and 12.  As a member of this collective, we are committed to ensuring that there is a strong and supportive transition program for students to ensure they can enrol in the best available combination of education and training options to fulfill their aspirations. These activities could include Years 11 & 12 TASC courses, Australian School-based Apprenticeships, Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications or online learning. Shared enrolments are available – for example, students may choose to study a VET program at Sorell on Tues/Thurs while studying Maths and Art at Triabunna on Mon/Wed/Fri.

Our program at Triabunna District School enables students to attain the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), a certification showing you have successfully completed 120 TCE credit points over the course of Years 11 & 12 and have an adult level of:

  • Reading, writing and communication (in English)
  • Mathematics
  • Use of computers and the internet

Sport

Each student is placed in one of the school’s House Teams – Freycinet (Yellow), Maria (Green) or Rheban (White). Secondary students have the opportunity to nominate for the positions of House Captain each year. During the year we have school sports events that include house Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming. Students also have the opportunity to participate in inter-school competitions including SPSSA and inter-high carnivals in Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming.

Upper Primary students are selected to participate in AFL, Netball or Soccer trials for the SPSSA Winter Carnival usually held during Term Three. Through this opportunity, students attend the nominated trial day and if successful at trials, they train with their team to then compete in the SPSSA Winter Carnival.

Secondary students are selected to participate in and compete against other district schools in a range of sports offered through RECLINK. Throughout the year, RECLINK provide the opportunity for the school to send one representative team for AFL 9’s, Cricket, Netball, Basketball and AFL.

Each year Grade 3-6 students participate in the compulsory Water Safety and Swim program that is conducted in Hobart. This program involves students travelling to a pool in Hobart everyday for a week to participate in a week of swimming and water safety lessons. This program is extended at school with the MAST Boat Safety Session, delivered every second year to students in Years 3-6.

Students from Kinder to Grade 2 participate in “Ready, Set, Rescue” during Terms 1 and 4. Ready, Set, Rescue is an initiative to help our students stay active and learn how to stay safe at the beach. While Kinder to Grade 2 complete Ready, Set, Rescue, our Grade 3 – 6 students participate in “Learn to Beach” sessions planned and taught by our 9/10 Explore the Coast students.
