Specialist Subjects

Music

Students from Prep to Grade 6 participate in weekly music lessons; music is played, sung, created, arranged, recorded, analysed and studied. There are opportunities for further musical extension and enrichment through the senior and junior choirs and senior band. These groups have regular practices and perform in assemblies, concerts and at special occasions, including Eisteddfods. Our Electronic Sound Crew, a team of grade 5-6 students, operate the sound systems at school activities.

Japanese (LOTE)

Students in Grades 3 to 6 learn Japanese during fortnightly lessons with a specialist languages teacher. Lessons include specific language instruction, cultural learning, songs and craft. Learning Japanese introduces students to a way of life that may differ greatly to their own, expands their view of the world and helps them understand the place of Australia in Asia. At times, students have the opportunity to connect with students in schools in Minamata City, Devonport’s Sister City in Japan.

ICT

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Learning Technologies (LTs) include the use of: computers, laptops, iPads, printers, the internet, email, digital/video cameras, scanners, web cams, interactive screens and assistive programs and software. At Miandetta Primary School ICTs and LTs are used to enhance teaching and learning in several ways: for ethically communicating with other people, for assisting with access for all, for publishing students’ work, for creating, investigating, researching and for learning skills for the 21^st Century. We take pride in developing safe attitudes towards utilising worldwide technology.

Physical Education (PE) and Sport

Students from Prep to Grade 6 students participate in weekly physical education (PE) lessons conducted by our specialist Physical Education Teacher. Classes also participate in a Daily PE Program; with trained Grade 5/6 Sports Leaders assisting the early childhood classes. Students are expected to wear appropriate footwear for all PE lessons.

Our school has three House teams:

Woniora (red)

Students are allocated to a House on enrolment.

Swimming Programs

Students from Prep – Grade 2 participate in our Water Awareness program each year. Students from Grade 3 – 6 participate in the Education Department Swim and Water Safety program at the Ulverstone Swimming Centre involving 10 x 45 minute sessions over a two week period.

Sporting Carnivals

Major school sport events include;

The school participates in the North West Primary School Sports Association (NWPSSA) Grade 3/4 Sports Expo, Grade 5/6 Sports Day, Ulverstone Cross Country and the Penguin Athletic Carnival.

Move Well Eat Well (MWEW)

Our school has been an accredited MWEW school since 2009. We reinforce healthy eating and promote physical activity. Students are encouraged to drink water and bottles are permitted on desks in the classroom. Teachers encourage students to eat fruit and vegetables, with students able to eat these during class time. Occasional foods are restricted and food rewards are not used. Students are encouraged to be active at breaks and equipment is provided to enable this. There is a bike rack provided and we encourage students to walk or ride to school. Each term, coordinated events take place that reflect our Move Well Eat Well criteria.

Sporting Teams

Students have the opportunity to participate in out of school hours sports including netball, basketball, soccer and touch football. This is possible due to the enthusiasm and commitment of voluntary coaches and managers

GO (GIFTED ONLINE)

We provide a range of learning programs to meet the needs of our gifted and talented students. Each year identified students participate in various GO programs. These may include: Ad Astra Senior, Ad Astra Junior, Infinity Squared, Arty Facts, Smart Bots Junior, Smart Bots Senior.

Literacy

Literacy is a priority for our school. We cater for a wide range of student learning needs in the area of literacy. Additional teacher and teacher assistant support is directed to students with additional needs.

Active Learning

Chickens

Our school has a chicken enclosure; with our chooks cared for by interested students who assist with cleaning their pen, daily feeding, checking water or coming to say hello.

Gardening Group

Our school has a vegetable and flower garden that is cared for by a team of students from grade 3 to 6. The team meets regularly during lunch under the supervision and guidance of a teacher to learn new skills and care for the gardens. Gardening team members also teach younger students gardening skills by working alongside them. Each class in the school takes responsibility for a worm farm built into the garden beds, by feeding the worms fruit and vegetable scraps each day. Classes are encouraged to plant and harvest garden produce throughout the year as part of the wellbeing and science curriculums.

Excursions

Excursions are organised by teachers throughout the year as an important part of the teaching and learning program. Parents who attend excursions as volunteer helpers must hold a current Working with Vulnerable People card.

Launching Into Learning

Launching into Learning is a free, play-based program for children aged between birth and four years. The sessions are co-ordinated by a teacher and children are accompanied to the sessions by parents, grandparents or guardians. The children play together and familiarise themselves with our school environment. Participating in activities such as craft, painting, music, outdoor and imaginative play. Group time includes singing songs, playing games and reading stories It is also a great opportunity for parents to meet other parents with similar aged children.

Children’s University (CU)

Our school is a registered member of Children’s University who are affiliated with the University of Tasmania. CU provides opportunities for students to engage in learning whilst developing their sense of confidence and aspirations. Through CU, students are encouraged to access local educational and learning activity providers; these include sports clubs, museums, galleries and school clubs. Late each year, students who have gained a minimum requirement are invited to a formal University graduation ceremony.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Providing leadership opportunities for students is an essential aspect of maintaining and fostering a supportive school community. These opportunities enable students to contribute to decision making processes and the day-to-day operation of the school. They are designed to promote the acquisition of life skills, including acting respectfully, developing independence, working co-operatively, being organised, having responsibilities, communicating with others and committing to a task. Student leaders’ behaviour should reflect the DoE values of respect, growth, courage and aspiration.
